The company’s founding mission was to promote hand-made Panama hats, a treasure discovered by three friends who met up in the Ecuadorian highlands in the 1970’s. Opening their business in 1982, the California based company focused from the start on procuring the very best handmade paja toquilla hats from Ecuador. Since Panama hats are made from paja toquilla plant leaves that are harvested and then grow back, the environment is not hurt in any way in their making, and the economy of the local people is strengthened by providing on-going work. A pioneer in exporting new Panama hat styles and weaves, Pantropic has always shown passionate enthusiasm in its support for native artisans, and its desire to sell a product made from renewable resources.

Sustainable Fashion Year Round
Since Pantropic offered its first hat, the Roll-Up Hiker Panama, the brand has become known for its characteristic headwear and accessory collections made primarily from natural fibers and sustainable materials. Over the span of close to 30 years the brand has gained a reputation for fine quality, unique designs and classic styling. Pantropic’s collection today includes recycled Polatec® hats and accessories, and more recently LiteFelt® wool hats which are also made from a renewable raw material, merino wool.
Much like Panamas, LiteFelt wool hats are also part of a sustainable industry in which sheep that graze the pastures and meadows in the
American South West are sheared humanely for their wool. Throughout its history the Pantropic tradition has been to maintain a natural fiber
and sustainable industry theme in the creation of its product line, while always trying to promote talented artisans.
