It's All In the Science
It's been proven that just simply putting on sunscreen is not enough. Whether sunscreen in not applied correctly, or simply certain areas of exposed skin are missed, sun protection factor (SPF) lotion is just the first step in skin care protection. With the rates of skin cancer rising every year, no one is a stranger to how it can affect a life and how small changes in daily activities can have life changing results. From simple wide brims
to hats with ultraviolet protection factor (UPF) ratings, hats.com has a wide selection of hats that will help you get on the right path to better skin care.
Research has shown that even clothing generally assumed to be protective often are not getting the job done, and that to be effective the material should have a UPF factor greater than 15. As a good rule of thumb, if the product does not have a UPF rating, then select a style with a thicker fabric or a tight weave. It has also been suggested that darker colors also offer natural UPF sun protection. Also, always try to keep in mind that shape of the hat - the wider the brim the better it will cover your face, ears, neck, and shoulders. Wide brims or western hats are great options, but there are also shorter brim styles that can offer protection.

Follow These Tips for Better Sun Protection
- WEAR A HAT! The wider the brim the better, but make sure it covers your
face, ears and neck.
- A tightly woven straw hat or cloth material will shade skin, but loosely woven hats will let in the sun's potentially harmful
rays. Look for hats with 50+ UPF rating.
- Seek shade between the peak daylight hours of 10 am and 2 pm.
- Make sure to apply 50+ SPF water resistant sunscreen 20 minutes before going outside, even on a cloudy or overcast day
- Use sunscreen even under clothing. The sun's rays can penetrate a typical t-shirt.
Reapply sunscreen every couple hours, especially when in and out of the water.
- Be mindful of surfaces such as sand, water and snow. Reflections can be just as harmful as direct sun rays.
- When exposed to higher altitudes where there is less atmosphere to absorb the sun's rays, be sure to take extra precautions
