About Gary Matthews

Following a very successful sixteen plus year career in Major League Baseball, Gary "Sarge" Matthews is well-known to many baseball fans. The left fielder played in San Francisco, Atlanta, Chicago, Seattle and Philadelphia - the city in which he picked up the "Sarge" nickname by saluting the left field fans cheering his appearances. During his first full season with the San Francisco Giants in 1973, Gary earned the National League Rookie of the Year trophy. His best offensive season in 1979 featured a .304 batting average with 27 home runs and 90 RBIs, earning him a spot on the All-Star Team. While playing with the Philadelphia Phillies in 1983, Gary was voted NLCS MVP. In the four game series over the LA Dodgers, Sarge racked up three home runs and eight runs batted in.

After his playing career, Sarge held coaching positions with the Chicago Cubs, Toronto Blue Jays and Milwaukee Brewers through 2006 as well as a radio commentary role for the Toronto Blue Jays from 2000 - 2001. Joining the Philadelphia Phillies broadcast staff in 2007, Sarge continues to be immersed in the game and appreciated by fans for his knowledge of the finer points of the game and enthusiastic delivery of his commentary.
